Advice for Pupils and Students

If someone is hurting or upsetting you or making you feel scared, it is not your fault.

You are not alone; there are people who can help you and stop people from making you feel scared or hurt.

You may be frightened of the person hurting you or your friends, but there are things you can do to get help and make it better.

This includes someone who may be frightening you on the Internet or on your mobile.

You should:

  • Tell someone you trust, such as your friends, teachers, parents or grandparents. Other people at school may be able to help.
  • Let people help to make things better by stopping the person from hurting you or your friends.

You shouldn’t:

  • Feel embarrassed or alone.
  • Feel that it is your fault or that you are to blame for someone hurting, frightening or touching you.
  • Keep it a secret.
  • Feel you have no one to turn to – people are there to help.

How we can help you

At Woldgate School, we ensure our pupils feel happy, safe and cared for every day.  It is important that you know how to look after yourself, who to speak to if you are worried about something, and what will happen next.

Who can help you?

Every member of staff is here to help you.  However, there are some key members of staff you can go to if you have a worry or question:

  • Your Form Tutor

  • Your Care & Achievement Coordinator

  • Your Head of School

  • Your subject teachers

  • Any teacher

  • Our Support Staff (based around in reception and around school)

  • Our School Nurse

  • Our Learning Support Team based in the Hive

  • Our Inclusion Team based in the Inclusion Room

  • Mr Sloman (Designated Safeguarding Lead) and Mrs Wright (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead)

What should you do if you have a worry or concern?

  • Speak to your Care & Achievement Coordinator or other member of staff in the first instance

  • If your concern is quite urgent i.e. relating to something important that day, speak to your Care & Achievement Coordinator at the first opportunity i.e. before school, break, lunchtime or afterschool.

  • If your concern is very urgent i.e. you believe you or someone you know is in possible danger, speak to any member of staff immediately.  They will inform the Designated Safeguarding Lead, the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead or a Senior Teacher.

  • Mr Sloman is the Designated Safeguarding Lead, and responsible for the safety and wellbeing of pupils.  His office is in Great Givendale Block

  • Mrs Wright is the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and Senior Care & Achievement Coordinator, and responsible for the safety and wellbeing of pupils.  Her office is in Great Givendale Block corridor.

Looking after your wellbeing and mental health

Wellbeing and mental health is just as important as physical health.  The first step is to ensure your wellbeing is as good as possible.  You can do this by ensuring the following:

  • Getting plenty of sleep, and at least 8 hours every night

  • Eat a healthy diet and limit how much unhealthy foods you eat/drink, particularly stimulants such as sugar and caffeine.

  • Limiting your screen time, particularly social media, to no more than 1 hour per evening.

  • Give yourself plenty of time to ‘switch off’ during evenings and weekends doing something you enjoy away from social media

  • Talk to a trusted family member or member of staff if you are struggling.

  • If things seem overwhelming, try to manage the things you can control.  It can be helpful to set specific times and days to complete homework or revision for example, and to include opportunities to exercise or see friends.

If you need any support, we are here to help

Speak to any member of staff if you need help.  They will pass on your concerns and your Care & Achievement Coordinator will support you by checking in with you regularly, and arranging for additional support if required.  Our Care & Achievement Coordinators have undertaken Mental Health First Aid training.

If you need more support, we can arrange for you to meet with the Child Welfare Practitioner, who visits school each week and supports individual pupils and students for up to 10 weeks.  The Child Welfare Practitioner can also refer you to further help and support if necessary.

Remember that you can speak to any member of staff, including your Care & Achievement Coordinator if you need help, advice, or if you just want to talk to someone, or if you are worried about someone else.  You can also follow the links below to find out about other help that is available outside of school.
