Skills Programme

“Businesses feel very strongly that the education system must better prepare young people for life outside the school gates, or risk wasting their talents. “The journey from school towards the world of work can be daunting, so we must support schools and teachers to help develop the skills, character and attitudes pupils need to progress in life” - John Cridland, CBI Director-General

“Young people lack vital skills to succeed in life”  BBC News item 2/10/15

These sorts of comments and headlines appear regularly in the news. The common message is that young people lack the skills or the awareness of the skills which would help them be successful in the world of work.

From September 2016, we are going to launch phase one of our Skills Programme. After extensive research, we have identified the following six key skills (sometimes called ‘soft skills’ or ‘employability skills’):

  • Team work
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Creative thinking and problem solving
  • Decision making
  • Leadership
  • Resiliance

Pupils will be encouraged to reflect on these skills in their curriculum subjects, assemblies, form time and in their Citizenship lessons. It is hoped that, in phase 1, pupils will become more aware of the skills and begin to think about how they could transfer to wider life and possibly employment. The skills programme is also linked in closely to the new rewards system that the school is using. In phase 1, Year 7 pupils are going to focus on one of these skills each half term. They are going to be given opportunities to put the skill into practise, reflect on it, and then think about how they could improve their competency in that skill.
