Sixth Form Courses & Careers

Guide to Subjects and Careers

Career Pathways

At Woldgate Sixth Form we recognise that exploring pathways for post 18 opportunities is a key aspect of the Sixth Form experience. Consequently, we offer a range of opportunities intended to support students to explore their options. These include visits to a range of universities in the North of England, inviting universities from across the UK to visit Woldgate Sixth Form, inviting a range of local employers into school to meet our students and supporting students to develop an understanding of the local labour market. Furthermore, our offer is adaptive to the interests of our students and our comprehensive personal development and pastoral care allows us to offer tailored information, advice and guidance to students on an individual basis.

Furthermore, we also invite interested students to participate in a number of career pathways throughout their Sixth Form journey. Currently, we offer Med 6, STEM 6 and Law 6.

Med 6 Career Pathway

Med 6 is designed for students with aspirations towards careers in medicine, healthcare and the life sciences. Rooted in the Woldgate Sixth Form values of compassion, curiosity and courage, this pathway provides opportunities to explore the wide range of careers available within the NHS. In previous years students have attended healthcare conferences, visited leading universities, heard from visiting lecturers and healthcare professionals, and gained work experience within York and Scarborough Hospitals Trust and Lincolnshire NHS Trust.

Through these experiences, students developed a deeper understanding of the skills, commitment and empathy required within these professions and have used these experiences to create competitive applications. Students graduating from this pathway have gone on to study medicine, adult and children nursing, physiotherapy and a range of degrees related to health and social care.

Law 6 Career Pathway

Law 6 supports students who are interested in pursuing careers in law, criminal justice, politics and related professions. Reflecting the Sixth Form ethos of compassion, curiosity and courage, students are encouraged to think critically about issues of justice, ethics and society. The Law 6 pathway offers access to university visits, visits to the local courts, guest speakers and opportunities to meet practising professionals from across the legal sector. By engaging with real-world legal issues and experiences, students develop the confidence, analytical skills and determination needed for future success in this challenging and rewarding field. Students graduating from this pathway have gone on to study law, criminology, politics and a range of social science-based subjects.

STEM 6 Career Pathway

STEM 6 is for students with a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics and an ambition to help shape the future through innovation and discovery. Guided by Woldgate Sixth Form’s values of compassion, curiosity and courage, students take part in university visits, industry conferences, specialist lectures and opportunities to meet experts working at the forefront of their disciplines. The programme inspires students to explore cutting-edge developments, broaden their understanding of STEM careers and develop the creativity, resilience and problem-solving skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Students graduating from this pathway have gone on to study a wide range of maths, science and engineering-based subjects. In addition, an increasing number of students who have participated in this pathway have secured prestigious degree apprenticeships with a range of global businesses.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The Extended Project Qualification (also known as the EPQ) is an independent research project completed in Y12 as a compulsory part of the student’s enrichment programme. The completed project is equivalent to ½ an A Level in terms of UCAS points. It is highly regarded by universities as it eases the transition from Sixth Form to degree level study. In fact, many prestigious universities will take it into account when deciding between applicants of equal academic standing.

For the award of an EPQ a student has to complete a research project of their own choosing, give a presentation, and keep a production log.

To enable our Sixth Formers to do this effectively, students are taught a range of research, referencing, presentation, report writing and resource and time management skills. Many students will choose a project that links to a university course or career that they wish to follow in the future. Each student is provided with a supervisor who will monitor their progress through regular individual tutorials.

“We encourage students to complete an EPQ, where possible, as we value the development of skills in independent study and research which an EPQ can offer. An EPQ in a subject that is related to the course or discipline you wish to progress into may be taken into account by admissions tutors when making decisions between applicants of equal academic standing.”
