A Supported Transition

A Supported Transition

Moving to secondary school is an exciting milestone, but we understand that it can bring questions and worries too. At Woldgate School, transition begins long before the first day of Year 7. Through welcoming experiences, close partnerships with primary schools and personalised support, we help children build confidence, develop friendships and feel part of our school community.

Our transition programme reflects our belief that every child should be known and cared for as an individual. We take time to understand what will help each pupil feel secure, happy and ready to learn.

Building confidence through shared experiences

Throughout the year, our programme offers opportunities for primary pupils to discover Woldgate School, meet our staff and pupils, and experience the breadth of school life. From maths and literacy challenges to sport, dance and opportunities to enjoy our school productions, these experiences encourage children to explore their interests, work together and begin making connections.

Our summer transition days help incoming Year 7 pupils become familiar with their surroundings, experience lessons and get to know the people who will support them in September.

Helping friendships grow

We know that having a familiar face can make a real difference. Our friendship form gives pupils the opportunity to tell us who they already know and who helps them feel comfortable.

For children joining without classmates from their primary school, or as part of a small group, we offer bespoke opportunities to meet other pupils before September. Through shared activities and friendly introductions, we help them begin their Woldgate journey with growing confidence and new connections.

Once pupils join us, our wide variety of lunchtime and after-school clubs, alongside Year 7 enrichment opportunities, helps them meet others with similar interests, discover new talents and develop a sense of belonging.

Extra reassurance where it is needed

Some children benefit from a more gradual introduction to secondary school. We work with families and primary staff to plan support around individual needs. This can include additional visits, personalised walk-arounds at quieter times, a peer mentor and a named member of staff to turn to.

Our dedicated SEND transition provision includes opportunities to meet the team at coffee mornings, visits to primary schools, and a transition morning followed by afternoon tea for families.

A welcome for the whole family

Parents and carers are an important part of transition. We encourage you to share questions or concerns early so that we can prepare together. Families are welcome to visit Woldgate by appointment through the school office.

Our aim is simple: for every child to arrive feeling welcomed, supported and ready to make the most of the opportunities ahead.
